Girls Lacrosse Starts Season Hot
The Norwood girls lacrosse team totaled just four wins during their 2017 campaign. This lack of success did not continue this season, however, as 2018 has been a different story all together.
The team started 5-3 for the first half of their season, surpassing their win total from 2017. The Lady Mustangs enjoyed a 3 game winning streak against Bellingham-Dedham-Weymouth before dropping their next 3 contests. They then won their last 2 games, taking down Bellingham for the second time this year and handling Norton easily. These two games will be a preview for next year since Norwood is moving to the Tri-Valley League.
The Lady Mustangs have been led mainly by a young squad this year, with freshmen Caroline Davey and Maggie Curran making big impacts at attack and midfield respectively. Sophomore Allie McDonough has also played a large role at midfield. Freshman Zoe Irving has played the bulk of the time between the pipes, helping the Mustangs win games by allowing five goals or less in three of their five wins. The team isn't just led by freshmen and sophomores, as captains Julia Higgins, Christina Reilly and Franki DeVingo provide leadership on and off the field.
The Lady Mustangs are led by second year coach Chuck Allen, who is now a familiar face at Norwood High by coaching 3 varsity teams. Allen has made 2 teams tournament teams in his tenure with the Mustangs, as he turned a boys hockey team that went 0-19-1 in 2015-16 into a tournament team this past season, also winning a game. He also brought the golf team to the state tournament for the first time in 3 seasons this past year.
The Lady Mustangs are now entering the second half of the season with 10 games remaining. They need four wins to give Coach Allen the trifecta, bringing Norwood High teams back to the state tournament.
